Overview

Many men who feel self-conscious about the appearance of their chest may benefit from this surgery. The objective of gynaecomastia is to make the chest proportional to the rest of the torso. If a man is significantly overweight, it would look odd to make the chest totally flat; if a man is very thin, then the chest should be quite flat.

The surgery can be done as day surgery, or with a one-night hospital stay. It is done under a general anaesthetic. Scars are minimised and hidden at the lower border of the areolar, where the pink and white skin meet.

Male breasts may become enlarged either by increasing glandular tissue or by fatty deposits. The method of surgery will depend upon the nature of the enlargement.

  • Glandular enlargement will need excision.
  • Fatty tissue in excess will require liposuction.
